On July 1st, 2023, Bitten & Mads Clausen’s Foundation purchased the plot on which Torvehallen in Sønderborg is located.
Torvehallen (the Market Hall) and the residential plot are subject to special requirements, as the building was built on temporary approvals and does not comply with building regulations. So even though Torvehallen is a busy and attractive restaurant in Sønderborg, its temporary permits cannot be extended beyond 2026.
As the new owner of the plot, it is the Foundation's intention to develop a new project that will continue to ensure a good and coherent connection between the Town's Harbour, Sønder Havnegade and the rest of the town. However, nothing is planned yet, and since Torvehallen has a license to operate a restaurant on the site until the end of 2026, there is plenty of time.
By then, Torvehallen will have been on the site for 10 years. It opened in 2016 and has been a popular restaurant for locals and tourists ever since. With its central location, it connects Sønder Havnegade and the new district of the Town's Harbour.
Within the next 3 years, when Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation decides which new and lasting project to build instead, it will draw on the good experiences gained so far. At the same time, alternative options for utilizing the site will be identified. Ultimately, the most important thing for the Foundation is to create a project that is in tune with its surroundings.
For now, Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation has become the owner of the plot, but there will be no changes for Torvehallen in the short term.
