Over the coming years, Sønderborg Airport will undergo a major strategic change in terms of both commercial development and surroundings. To realise these ambitious plans, a new CEO with extensive experience in both regional and international aviation has been appointed.
Fact
Sønderborg Airport is jointly owned by Sønderborg Municipality and B&MC Holding, a subsidiary of Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation.
Sønderborg Airport may be small. But the ambitions are big. Over the next three years, more than 200 million kroner will be invested in modernisation, which is the largest investment in a domestic airport in Denmark in recent years. The airport is to have a strong business focus, and a completely new commercial strategy will be developed. In connection with this, the board of directors has decided to hire a new CEO.
The new CEO is Jákup Sverri Kass. He has 20 years of experience in regional and international aviation, transport, and tourism, and has led extensive investment in and development of Vagar Airport in the Faroe Islands.
With Jákup Sverri Kass, we have found a highly qualified CEO to lead Sønderborg Airport into the future. We get a CEO who has experience in modernising and developing local airports in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, who has extensive experience in aviation, and who has demonstrated important competencies in strategy, finance, and project management. We look forward to and expect a lot from this collaboration.
– Lars Tveen, Chairman of the board of Sønderborg Airport
Erik Lauritzen, vice chairman of the board, agrees and says:
As an infrastructure, the airport is of crucial importance to Sønderborg Municipality's business community and private individuals. Together, the board of directors has completely revised the strategic foundation for the airport, and the prerequisites for modernising and developing Sønderborg Airport have changed when it comes to implementing the master plan of the airport. As a result, the position of CEO has changed.
Erik Lauritzen, Mayor, and Vice-Chairman of the board of the airport
Big task ahead
The new CEO will have plenty to do, both managing the extensive construction work and increasing passenger numbers by attracting more routes and operators to Sønderborg Airport. The goal is to reach 150,000 passengers per year. The new CEO is looking forward to taking on the challenge.
The new CEO will start on 15th February 2024
Christian Berg will leave his position on 15th January, and Jákup Sverri Kass will start on 15th February. In the intervening month, Martin Johanning from Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation will be the interim manager of Sønderborg Airport.
This is a really exciting task. Sønderborg Airport has huge potential, and I am very much looking forward to getting to know the area, the employees, and the plans better. I am motivated by creating growth, and this is best done in collaboration across the public and private sectors. Together, we will incorporate sustainability and development into the airport and contribute to strengthening tourism, industry, and the region.
Jákup Sverri Kass, new CEO of Sønderborg Airport
Jákup Sverri Kass will move to Sønderborg in connection with the appointment, and succeeds Christian Berg, who has held the position for the past 8 years.
We would like to thank Christian Berg for his efforts as CEO of the airport and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
