In 2018, Bitten & Mads Clausen’s Foundation donated an artwork by Olafur Eliasson to the town’s harbour. The work of art has since been developed and made, ready for its arrival in Sønderborg in April 2019. Here the work of art will be placed in the area between Alsik and the Multicultural House. In this position, it will be visible, not only to visitors in both buildings, but also to people on the water and to guests in Alsion on the opposite side of Alssund.
The work of art consists of six large rings, the biggest of which are 5.5 metres in diameter. The rings are currently being prepared in a steel works in the Netherlands where the photos were taken for this article. The people standing in the photo next to the rings, give you an idea of just how big these rings are and how they will appear to visitors on Bitten and Mads Clausen’s Square. The feet supporting the rings will not be visible as they will be cast in concrete when the artwork is put in place. Before it all arrives in Sønderborg, further welding will ensure that the six rings will appear whole and unbroken.
The photo below shows how the finished artwork will look against Alssund and with Alsion in the background.
