Alsik - resort and spa

Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation plays an active role in making the dream of a modern waterfront a reality: from industrial port to a lively new district with homes, offices and plenty to see and do.

New opportunities in Sønderborg

The hotel is expected to have 65,000 guests its first year, attracted by amenities such as the new conference facilities and Nordic spa. Amenities not available in the area at present. When the hotel is complete, local residents and visitors alike will also have the unique opportunity to see Sønderborg from above, from the viewing platform in the 70-metre high hotel tower.

The Foundation is contributing to the master plan for Sønderborg’s waterfront by, together with PFA Pension, building the region’s largest four-star conference and business Nordic design hotel offering high quality and above average-sized rooms. The building is called Alsik and boasts 190 rooms, conference facilities and a market-leading spa and wellness area inspired by “Nordic living”. The building also has a viewing platform that will be open to the public, not to mention three restaurants specialising in Nordic cuisine.

“We are delighted that the project is now making serious progress. With the hotel project we are demonstrating that we – together with the municipality of Sønderborg and PFA as an investor – have the strength and will to put Als and Sønderborg on the map.”

Peter Mads Clausen, Chairman of Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation

Alsik was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and with its 19 floors and unique architecture, it will be a landmark for Sønderborg in an urban yet scenic area on the waterfront by Alssund. The project will create synergy between business guests on weekdays and tourists during the weekend making it possible to attract larger conferences and events to Sønderborg.

The high number of rooms represents a significant increase in the number currently available in Sønderborg. Sønderborg currently has around 250 hotel rooms, so Alsik will almost double the capacity in the area. The hotel will actually create a new market in Sønderborg through new amenities such as wellness and conference facilities, and will thus help to attract more visitors to stay overnight in Sønderborg.

The total investment for the project is more than DKK 750 million. Construction started on 13 November 2015 with a groundbreaking ceremony and is expected to be completed by the first months of 2019.

The Alsik-building has been designed at constructed with a focus on sustainability and energy efficience. It was build to energy-classes above the legal requirements at the time of the construction.
