The background for starting work on the marketing of Sønderborg stems from a report that Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation commissioned from the Boston Monitor Group in 2004.
The report pointed out challenges for the area regarding education levels, emigration, and job creation, but also highlighted opportunities to change this development over a 35-year perspective. Since then, efforts have been made to improve the area's educational offerings, housing, and infrastructure. These elements change the future of Sønderborg by making the area more attractive.
An important element of the work is to market the achieved results. GOTO Sønderborg is a public-private partnership between the municipality and the Bitten & Mads Clausens Foundation, which handles this task.
